Madison Scottish Country Dancers have organized an array of activities spanning a full weekend … or centuries in time. Allow yourself to be swept away in the grandeur of the UW Memorial Union Great Hall … or perhaps it’s the Clava Cairns of Inverness … where we convene for our Saturday dinner and Ball. Please join us for any or all events. Spectators and time-travelers welcome! Come dressed as a soldier from the 1700s, a WWII nurse, a Scottish wench, or in your favorite ball attire. Period dress optional. It’s a weekend you won’t want to miss! More about Outlander. The weekend festivities begin with a Friday evening concert featuring the best in Scottish music from two masters of the art, Tim Macdonald, fiddle, and Susie Petrov, piano. Enjoy their selection of old and new favorites in a relaxed and intimate setting. A dance workshop on Saturday morning, geared to dancers of all levels, will help participants hone their technique while appreciating the interaction of music and dance. Susie’s enthusiasm is contagious--she’ll help you enjoy the movements and “feel” of how a tune interacts with the formations and figures of Scottish Country dancing. Saturday afternoon Tim and Susie will offer a music workshop aimed at acquainting participants with the distinctive idiom of Scottish music. Players of all experience levels, instruments and learning styles (by ear or by reading music) are welcome. Tim is especially interested in helping violinists make the cross-over to fiddling. The deadline for early registration and dinner is March 13; a $10 late fee will apply after that date. Tim Macdonald - Susie Petrov
Tim Macdonald, fiddle, is the 2014 U.S. Scottish Fiddle Champion. He has played the violin since age 4 and became interested in Scottish fiddling when attending a Scottish festival at age 12. Tim quickly began studying with leading Scottish fiddlers and attended summer sessions at the Jink and Diddle School of Scottish Fiddling in North Carolina. He has a strong interest in music history, evidenced in his winning performance at the US Fiddle Championship, which consisted entirely of pieces written before 1793, played on period instruments.
Susie Petrov, piano, has become an accomplished dancer, pianist, accordionist and teacher of Scottish Country dancing since attending her first dance in high school. She has performed as soloist and with leading Scottish music fiddlers at numerous dance camps, classes and dances from San Francisco to Oslo and beyond. Susie has some 14 recordings and two books to her credit, and is currently tutoring RSCDS teacher candidates in the Boston area.

Want to know more about Outlander?
We draw our theme from the novels of Diana Gabalden (and current Starz TV series) which depict a fictional adventure in time-travel to 18th century Scotland. Outlander is the first in her series of eight historical novels. The story centers on a WWII nurse, Claire Randall, who time travels to 18th century Scotland and finds adventure and romance with the dashing James Fraser. A mix of several genres, the series features elements of historical fiction, romance, adventure and science fiction/fantasy. The books in the Outlander series have sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and have been translated into many languages.
